Ginny and I turned off our IM functions yesterday. I don't think either of us found it augmented our PoF experience, although I should probably only speak for myself.
With IM, I did get to chat to one nice guy (no dating potential, though), and one person with whom I've been corresponding. The other requests I accepted were not great, for a variety of reasons. I also turned down a few requests because they came in at inconvenient times. Perhaps,, if I had more time to devote to PoF, it would be fun but, at present, I use my message inbox as a filter, only responding to people who seem interesting. You don't have the same screening ability with IM, unless you check their profiles first, which is what I started doing after a couple disastrous conversations. But this is a lot of work when I'm already complaining about how much time/effort PoF can require.
All in all, IM did not augment my online experience.
